Wire-Wrapped

About a week ago, Daniel helped me make some wire in his studio. It's the first time that I've ever made wire by myself, and it was a great learning experience. (I used the torches for the first time, and managed to not burn myself or Daniel's studio!) It's fun and rewarding to learn new metal-smithing techniques. I love being able to take the wire I made myself, and use it in my jewelry making.



After teaching me how to use the torches and pull wire, Daniel decided to teach me another new technique. It's called a "Viking Knit", and it's a rather popular wire-wrapping technique. My first attempt turned out a little wonky and lop-sided. But after a bit of practicing, I got the pattern down really well. I think I have a lot of fun with this technique because it is very similar to macrame and weaving, which I'm rather good at. I want to attempt this same "Viking Knit" but using Hemp Thread instead of Copper Wire.

The best part is that most of these pieces aren't finished yet. I'm planning to add macrame work, beads, tassels, and other decorations. I can't wait to see how they turn out!

I've always been really attracted to wire-wrapped stone jewelry. Right now, I'm having a bit of an obsession with it. I'm always on the look-out for a pretty stone or shell to trap! I love this technique so much, I'm dreaming up ways of incorporating into the jewelry in my shop.
